June 9 – August 13
Casa Coastal: Rebecca Louise Law is an ambitious exploration of art and horticulture, pivoting on a community dialogue about the importance of native and water-wise plants in coastal Southern California. A year-long educational initiative culminates in an immersive installation artwork designed by renowned British artist Rebecca Louise Law using 8,000 water-wise blooms grown by the Orange County community.

About Casa Coastal: Rebecca Louise Law

Since October 2017, Casa Romantica has invested in education-based events to teach our community about responsible gardening and the importance of cultivating native and water-wise plants. The cultural center hosted monthly garden workshops, garden “office hours,” and opened an exhibition plot where community volunteers could learn to grow plants under the guidance of Casa Romantica garden staff. In addition to its onsite activities, several organizations and institutions grew plants from seed offsite, including the cities of Irvine and Mission Viejo, the Saddleback College Horticultural Program, the UCCE Orange County Master Gardeners, the Orange County Independent Master Gardeners, the San Clemente and Talega Garden Clubs, several Girl and Boy Scout troops, and hundreds of individuals throughout Orange County.

Casa Romantica’s commission of an installation by Rebecca Louise Law is the first major installation piece of its kind in Southern California. Law is best-known for artworks created with natural materials, namely flora. She is passionate about natural change and preservation,  and takes pride in creating installations that are representative of the region she is commissioned in. The life cycle of her materials and region-specific blooms contributes to the evolution of each work. Law’s work has been exhibited in Times Square, Art Basel, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Royal Opera House, and the Royal Academy, among others. She has completed commissions for internationally recognized brands including Viacom, Tiffany, Hermès, Burberry, and Jo Malone. She has been featured in such publications as The New York Times, The Oprah Network, CNN, The Huffington Post, Newsweek, and House Beautiful.
